Get UNREAL? Yeah, too easy...

Sounds good, right:?
I guess I'm reluctant to believe claims, as most candy that's touted to be healthier or better for you generally tastes like balls. You know all the sugars and fats that are so bad for you? Those are the ones that also cause triggers in our brains to go "woooo!" And that's with natural sugars and fats. I'm not even going to get into what the unnatural stuff Americans love to load their food with does.
Do you know that there is an American style chocolate? There is. The process of how chocolate is made in America is different than in the rest of the world. Look it up and see. I'm not fond of American chocolate. I don't like the taste. I do, however, love dark chocolate, and various other European fancies. No, this isn't because I'm a snob. The tastes are completely different. Some people prefer American chocolate to other kinds. Not saying that there's anything wrong with that, just saying that this is my opinion, and how I prefer my oranges to your apples. Someone once got VERY offended by my comment that I don't like American chocolate. People take their chocolate very seriously, apparently. Maybe a little too seriously, me thinks.
BzzAgent put out a campaign for Unreal a while back, and I was selected to receive a pack with some promos for trying and reviewing. I tried all five varieties available that are available, which are:
- Unreal 77 - Peanut butter cups (Reese's)
- Unreal 8 - Chocolate, caramel, nougat, and peanut bar (Snickers)
- Unreal 41 - Candy coated chocolates (M&M's)
- Unreal 54 - Candy coated chocolates and peanuts (Peanut M&M's)
- Unreal 5 - Chocolate, caramel, and nougat bar (Milky Way)
The first that I tried was Unreal 77, which is the peanut butter cups. I learned that unlike most peanut butter cups, these do not have wrappers over the bottom, which really sucked when I dropped one. These were my least favorite of the whole group. They definitely had a dark chocolate taste to them, which to me a was a pleasant surprise. They were very, very dense, and they didn't have that greasy texture that a lot of peanut butter cups have. In fact, these were drier than most cups, which isn't something that I found that I didn't really care for. I also didn't care for the peanut butter, but I'm not a big peanut butter fan, so I'm biased.
After the disappointment of number 8, I tried Unreal 41. I didn't have very high hopes, because while I love M&M's, I have never found another brand that I liked. Generic M&M's make me gag. Poor 41 didn't have much leeway here. When I opened the bag, my first thought was that they looked like tropical fruit Skittles. The bag pictured candies that were in bright primary colors; the product was deep, dusky jewel tones. Pretty colors, just not what I was expected.
Another thing that I did not expect was how good these really were. They weren't light, melt in your mouth pieces. These puppies were heavy and dark. Again, they almost had a dark chocolate taste that I absolutely loved. Some M&M's (and thier counterparts) have a gritty texture to them. These did not.
Unreal 5 had the difficult task of following up after 41. It's advertised as a chocolate, nougat, caramel bar, and is indeed that. It's good, in fact quite a bit better than its peanuty cousin, 8. It didn't have the sense of blandness and boredom that 8 did. Maybe that's why 8's peanuts ran away?
The caramel in this was very creamy and smooth. I liked the nougat, too, which is saying a lot. Usually nougat and I don't get along. To me, this didn't taste like your standard nougat. It wasn't sickeningly sweet.
Despite this, it's texture and taste reminded me of homemade divinity. Yum!
The last one I tried was undoubtedly my favorite of the whole lot. In fact, these have become my favorite chocolate candies, period.
Unreal 54 is pretty much the same as it's brother, 41. Same great flavour and texture, with an added boost of peanuty deliciousness. Again, these aren't the primary colored globes pictured on the package, but the same sexy, dusky colors of its sibling. I'm not sure why Unreal did this, but hey, whatever. It's all good.

It's nice that there's an alternative out there without all that extra crap!
